Betty’s Run for ALS returns to Calgary this June and here’s how to register

Ready, set, and… relax, this one’s for charity.

Betty’s Run for ALS is back for its 28th year, and you can be part of the action this summer. The fundraising event is set to take over North Glenmore Park on June 9th to raise funds for ALS research initiatives all over Alberta.

This is a family-friendly event and you can choose to either walk 5 km or run 8 km, both at your own pace. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to get outside and be active for a good cause.

For those who aren’t familiar with ALS (or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), it is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerves responsible for sending messages to the brain. This can result in the affected person losing their ability to move, swallow, and breathe over time.

Betty’s Run was started nearly three decades ago by the inspirational Betty Norman, who had a wish to find a cure for ALS. Despite her own battle with the illness, she dedicated her time and energy to bringing this vision to life.

In the years since the run has become one of the largest Canadian fundraisers for ALS, and participants have helped raise more than $8.5 million for research, equipment, and client support services. These funds stay in Alberta and are invested provincially to help improve the lives of those living with and affected by ALS.

Pretty amazing, eh?

Each year, the run has an ambassador – and this year’s is Dave McMaster. Born and raised in Dryden, Ontario, Dave was always an avid sports enthusiast. He first noticed symptoms of ALS when he began to slow down on the tennis court. Through a series of doctor visits and extensive testing, he later received an ALS diagnosis.

By taking part in Betty’s Run, you can help celebrate hope for people like Dave and anyone else affected by this terrible disease – while ensuring the ALS Society of Alberta can keep up its incredible work too.

“It is a privilege and great honour to be named Ambassador for the 2024 Betty’s Run for ALS,” says Dave. “Please join me and the ALS Alberta Community on June 9th and help raise awareness and funds for this terminal disease.”

With the weather warming up, why not get out, exercise, and support a fantastic cause? You take part as an individual or get a little competitive and join a team to boost your fundraising total!
