This Seattle attraction is home to the US’ busiest canal locks and a botanical garden

Ballard has a rich maritime history with one of the most iconic remnants being the Ballard Locks. It’s probably Seattle’s coolest park between the Locks, Fish Ladder, and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens. Here’s how you can check out the Ballard Locks.

The Ballard Locks are one of the US’s 171 lock sites. They also happen to be the busiest lock site in the nation and are a national historic site. Today, they are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and help Seattleites and boat users get from Lake Washington and Lake Union to Puget Sound and vice versa.

Besides the locks, visitors can also check out the park’s fish ladder which helps Sockeye, Chinook, and Coho salmon on their yearly journey.

That’s not all though, the park is also home to the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens which took over 40 years to create! They are maintained to this day with the park’s original direction in mind and contain 500 plant species and 1,500 varieties of plants.

So if you’re looking to take a walk anytime soon and experience something new, now you know where to go.
