Thought you heard the last of Altea Active? Think again! The luxury gym and wellness destination plans to expand across Toronto, opening a new location in the Beaches community.
It’s been almost a year since the brand’s fitness concept, AVANT by Altea Active, opened its doors in Yorkville. Offering more studio sessions compared to its sister location in Liberty Village, both have seen success in the city. And clearly, Altea wants more.
The new Altea Active will be at 1651 Queen St. E. For those familiar with the address, it’s where Cineplex Cinemas Beaches currently resides. However, according to Cineplex, the theatre will have its final day of operations on Feb. 17, 2026.
“After many wonderful years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close The Beaches Cinemas,” shared Cineplex on its website.
“We sincerely thank you for your support over the years and look forward to welcoming you at our neighbouring theatres: Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, Yonge-Dundas Cinemas & VIP, Eglinton Town Centre, and VIP Cinemas Don Mills.”
The wellness brand will transform the property into a two-floor, 59,000-square-foot club. It will combine the best of AVANT, like its spa component and Altea Active Liberty Village, under one roof. Oh, but no pool. Sorry, Toronto.
Noting the building’s importance to the community, Altea Active CEO Jeff York tells Curiocity the vision is for a design that feels cohesive with its surroundings. The team plans to keep some of the heritage of the building, such as the atrium, when bringing the facility to life.
“We’re working with some really great professionals to put up a first-class facility,” shares York. “It’s not going to be this suburban type of concrete gym. It’ll be a little smaller than Liberty Village, but still a really good use of space.”
Though still in its early stages of development, the new hub is projected to open sometime in 2028. But the expansion doesn’t end there.
The brand is targeting at least five more neighbourhoods in Toronto. As to where those would be, York tells us that due to competition, he’s unable to disclose.
Along with Toronto, Altea Active is also located in Ottawa, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
And we’re sure more are to come, very soon.
