Winter’s warm embrace: Here’s a look at Alberta’s January weather forecast

The winter season is here while there is some snow on the ground – the temperatures have been fairly mild province-wide.

Now, with January on its way, many are wondering if they should keep their puffy jacket at the ready or swap ’em out for a lighter jacket and we’ve got an answer!

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Alberta weather forecast will continue to show higher temperatures in the coming month but it might not last!

“Christmas into the start of January we’re looking well above normal,” Alysa Pederson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada told Curiocity.

“Like, we’re talking 5 to 10 degrees in different parts of the province.”

In fact, Calgary is showing a high of 12°C on Wednesday, December 27th, while Edmonton is showing a weekly high of 6°C on Tuesday.

“That’s not going to change as we go through January,” she added.

“All of our indications are that the first couple weeks are going to be above normal.”

Pederson did feel it was important to note, however, that these “normal” temperatures will continue to drop as we near the colder months and even encouraged us to stay on our toes.

“December this year was very warm. At this point, it’s in the top 5 warmest on record, potentially pushing for the warmest December on record depending on how the next week unfolds – but you know, I think it’s important to remember not to get comfortable with this warmth.”

“This is not super normal for this time of year and as we go into January and February, those are our colder months of the year – where we get those Arctic outbreaks and deep freezes.”

In conclusion, enjoy it while it lasts, Alberta!

Winter is still on its way – it’s just taking a little while longer to get there this time around.

Stay warm, have fun and don’t lose your gloves! You’ll need them come February.
