A West Vancouver cop was fired for calling in sick 25 times to coach hockey

Now here’s a truly Canadian story to share. In a recently published report, the office that handles complaints against police officers in BC shared the story of a West Van cop who, in their devotion to the game, called in sick from work to coach hockey. What’s more, they did it for years. Here’s the scoop.

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner’s annual report, which highlights some of the complaints brought against police officers, featured the tale. In April of 2019, a West Van cop called in sick two days in a row. Then, during what was supposed to be his second shift, he was spotted coaching community hockey instead.

Turns out that that was just the tip of the iceberg, though. Upon a closer look, the officer was found to have called in sick 25 (!!) times over a four-year period to do the same thing, from 2015 to 2019. What’s more, he had denied that he called in sick to coach hockey to his supervisor. That’s serious dedication to the team.

Just not the one he was, you know, paid to be on. Although this West Van cop with a love of hockey resigned from the department prior to the issue getting resolved, his service record will not note that he was, in fact, fired for his behaviour.
