A massive new neighbourhood is being planned in west Toronto (IMAGES)

Big plans are being made for the area surrounding CF Sherway Gardens. The first phase of a new Master Plan has officially been announced, which will transform the Etobicoke region into a hub of residences, offices, parks, and more.

The new neighbourhood is described as a “vibrant, complete community” that will also open up opportunities for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy the area. This would be a big change from what the area looks like now, which is basically just busy roads with heavy traffic around the mall.

Being one of Canada’s “most successful shopping centres,” Sherway Gardens will serve as the centerpiece of the new mixed-use community, which will urbanize the area and help it thrive, according to a press release by Cadillac Fairview (CF).

The first phase of the new community will be built on the north side of the shopping centre, fronting The Queensway.

The site will be home to “four new buildings, two condominiums and two CF rental residential buildings, with retail and amenities,” the release says. A public park and pedestrian urban plaza are also included in the proposal.

“The rezoning application required to permit the Phase 1 development has now been filed with the City,” CF says.

A similar project is in the works at Yorkdale Mall. The owner of the mall, Oxford Properties Group, plans to build rental apartment buildings at the mall, as well as Mississauga’s Square One and Scarborough Town Centre.

“We’re starting to go vertical,” said President Michael Turner said on Tuesday, according to The Financial Post. “I can assure you that what you see today is not what they’re going to look like over the coming decade or two.”

Another major community is in the works north of Toronto in Innisfil called The Orbit, complete with futuristic-looking new buildings and new developments around the GO Station.
