A massive $100 million hotel development has been approved for Bragg Creek

Bragg Creek is known for many things: Incredibly fresh air, its many hiking trails, towering trees, and its western aesthetic. But it won’t be long until it’s known for something else as well – something almost completely different because the down-home hamlet just west of Calgary was just given the go-ahead to build Gateway Village, a massive residential hotel development along the River.

The project, which will be overseen by local developer Dick Koetsier with Gateway Developments, will occupy just over 12 acres of land and cost approximately $100 million to build.

According to the proposal, the resort-style hotel will be designed to feature a unique blend of Rocky Mountain and rustic Bragg Creek architecture, and will dramatically transform the entire landscape of the area.

With 120-hotel suites, 170 units of owned and leased condos, pathways, an amphitheatre, and expanded commercial amenities, this development is said to be a huge step in encouraging tourists, not only to stay for a day but throughout the week as well – bringing more money into the hamlet and creating jobs for those that need them.

Of course, such a change has been met with some criticism from people who actually live in the town. In an article written by the Calgary Herald, some locals have publicly opposed the development, saying that it could threaten the ambiance and laid-back atmosphere of Bragg Creek – which is what most love most about the hamlet.

Now we want to know what you guys think! Would somewhere like Gateway Village be an incentive to stay longer in the town, or do you believe that this is a big misstep? Let us know!
