A local group wants to install gondolas between West Seattle and Downtown

If you thought 2020 couldn’t get any crazier, you’re wrong. And if in fact, we won’t hold our breath because there are 9 days left of the year and that’s plenty of time for 2020 to act up some more. But what we’re talking about today is the West Seattle group that wants to add gondolas to the city.

The group called West Seattle SkyLink is advocating for gondolas instead of light rail. And their whole spiel is that gondolas will be cheaper, quicker to build, and able to carry the same amount of commuters. In fact, the group thinks the project could be done as soon as 2023 or 2024. Now as crazy as it does sound, they might just be on to something because the city of Seattle has probably broken some records for how slowly they deal with infrastructure projects.

Plus the proposed gondolas would only run between West Seattle and Downtown. And with the loss of the West Seattle Bridge and halt in bridge projects across the city, this might end up being the only option. But of course, this does come with some issues like max ridership and also safety concerns.

So we won’t expect to see gondolas in the city of Seattle anytime soon but we do like the idea. Because we’d be pretty down to take a gondola into work every day especially because the light rail won’t be done until 2031. And we can’t even think about what’s happening tomorrow let alone in 11 years.
