A secret room of lights that react to your pulse to open beneath the Gardiner Expressway

There is a brand new interactive public art installation coming to Toronto’s The Bentway next month. It’s taking over a secret room located beneath the Gardiner Expressway at Exhibition Place which has never before been accessed by the public. Already sounds cool right? Well get this, the piece moves in tandem with your heartbeat.

So what is this mysterious installation? It’s called PULSE TOPOLOGY and it was created by internationally renowned Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. He’s known for works that are meant to be experienced and has shown at institutions like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Arsenal Art Contemporain, and more.

This breathtaking, interactive installation uses an array of 3,000 lights to create a landscape of upside-down mountains and valleys suspended from the space’s ceiling. Using touchless biometric technology, the lights will react in real-time to the pulse of visitors’ heartbeats. That means the artwork will change and evolve with every visit, making it a truly unique and interactive sensory experience for visitors.

Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has described the piece as “a visualization of human vital signs after a time of social-distancing and mourning,” further “The piece consists of a labyrinth of lights and speakers reacting to the pulse of participants, creating a connective, immersive experience from individual biometrics, reminding us that we are not alone. The work is a memento mori, celebrating our fleeting existence.”

Tickets for viewings between October 2nd-16th go on sale today, September 14th, and tickets for viewings between October 17th-31st go on sale October 5th.
