Well, the installation has finished on Vancouver’s newest public art piece, and we can go now see a… giant spinning chandelier hanging under the Granville Street Bridge. The $1.2M kinetic art sculpture comes via Westbank, the developer behind the new Vancouver House building.
They asked Vancouver School member Rodney Graham to create the piece. The Abbotsford-born artist has worked in sculpture, photography, and film over the years, but found inspiration in a pretty weird place.

Well, using the word weird to describe art inspiration probably isn’t appropriate, but it’s a Friday. Anyway, Spinning Chandelier is a sculptural interpretation of Graham’s 2005 film Torqued Chandelier Release (surprise!). And that film was inspired by Sir Isaac Newton’s famous water bucket experiment.
You don’t exactly need to know all this to look at a pretty spinning chandelier. But hey, we thought we might as well give you the full lowdown before you head down there for an Instagram pic. Knowledge is power, right?
