According to the 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards from Condé Nast Traveler, Victoria has earned a spot on a list of the world’s best small cities. It’s a fun nod for BC and Canada since we’ve landed alongside some of the world’s top tourist destinations.

Victoria took the 8th spot overall. For Condé Nast, the city’s Fairmont Empress hotel, British activities (high tea gets a shoutout) and proximity to nature make it a more than worthwhile destination. Of course, we’re also going to toss a vibrant restaurant scene in there for good measure.

If you’re curious about where we landed, then here’s the full list:

  1. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
  2. Chiang Mai, Thailand
  3. Mérida, Mexico
  4. Monte Carlo, Monaco
  5. Valletta, Malta
  6. Salzburg, Austria
  7. Siena, Italy
  8. Victoria, Canada
  9. Florence, Italy
  10. Edinburgh, Scotland

Now, we will say that we looked up the populations for the cities on this list, and we are kind of scratching our heads. Some spots (Siena, Valletta, and Victoria) all have populations under 100,000. Meanwhile, picks like Mérida and Edinburgh have at least five times the population.
