THE VERY FIRST TIM HORTONS

Everyone knows Tim Hortons is Canadian, but did you know the very first location of the iconic coffee shop is only a day trip away? Head on out to Hamilton to spot the place. It was founded way back in 1964 by the NHL Legend Tim Horton himself.

CHELTENHAM BADLANDS

You won’t have to go as far as you think to experience the beautiful sights that are the badlands. Ontario’s got our very own right in Caledon! This wild outdoor spot provides plenty of room for hiking, exploring, and marvelling at the natural wonder. The place definitely doesn’t look like your typical Ontario road trip destination.

FLOWERPOT ISLAND

Another out-of-the-box spot has got to be Flowerpot Island in the Bruce Peninsula. Massive stone structures line the beach that resemble a “flowerpot” shape. The pillars were naturally formed and tower high above the shoreline. The location also has plenty of caves and hiking trails to explore.

MAMAN

This next pick might be far enough to require an overnight stay, but it’s wild enough we still had to include it. Over in Ottawa, you can explore a massive spider sculpture named “Maman.” The sculpture stands at 30 feet tall and is said to be a representation of fertility, motherhood, shelter, and the home.

THE BIG APPLE

No, we’re not suggesting a trek to New York City. Instead, head on over to Ontario’s very own version of the Big Apple… A literal, massive apple. The nearby spot is known for all the apple-centred goodies they serve up. We’re talking pies, candy apples, apple crumble, apple fritters, and more. If you can dream it up, they’ve probably got it.

THE MAPLE SYRUP MUSEUM

For the most Canadian destination on our list, head on over to the Maple Syrup Museum. This day trip is only about an hour and a half from the city and has got some of the sweetest offerings around. They also frequently host the annual Maple Syrup Festival, where you’ll be able to sample Canadian desserts of every kind.

GIANT TOONIE

Or just check out some massive Canadian currency. This weird day trip destination will have you marvelling at the whopping 27-foot-tall towering toonie overlooking Old Mill Park. The statue was built in recognition of the local artist who designed the polar bear seen on the actual coin.

ZAVIKON ISLAND

This last spot is 3 hours from the city, but it might just be worth the trip. Zavikon Island is a crazy property said to exist both in Canada and the States. How, you ask? Its 32-foot bridge across the St Lawrence River connects the Canadian part of the island with its American backyard. This would make the Zavikon Island bridge the shortest international bridge in existence.
