6 things to think about before travelling again

Alright team, with the borders opening back up and things looking up on the travel front, it’s time to start thinking about getting organized and getting away for that much-needed vacation we’ve been putting off for the past many months. But before you go jettin’ off, there are a few things to think about beforehand to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible… ‘cause let’s face it, after this year, we all deserve smooth travelling.

With that in mind, we’ve teamed up with Coast Hotels, to bring you a list of all the things to think about before we travel again. In case you’re not familiar with them, Coast Hotels is a North American hotel brand unlike any other. Instead of characterless hotels that could be in any city, staying in a Coast Hotel means experiencing hotels that are unique and reflective of the destinations they’re located in! As Canada’s largest brand and with properties throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii and Alaska- they know what they’re talking about when it comes to travel.

So, let’s get to it!

Check that your passport isn’t expired

Sure this sounds obvious but, do you actually know when your passport expires? Before you go booking that flight to a far-away destination, be sure to check that your passport is still valid or be sure to apply for a new one asap if it has expired.

Opt for trip cancellation insurance

We’re hoping that this is an extra cautionary measure but, the way things have been going for us the past 18+ months… you can never be too safe. If it’s an option, we’d recommend thinking about adding on that insurance in case anything comes up and you have to postpone. Luckily, one good thing to come out of the pandemic is that loads of airlines have already launched a flexible booking system with no change fees.

Understand the travel restrictions for your destination and return home

If you’re travelling from the US, make sure you have checked the CDC travel information on their website here to make sure you understand all the current regulations and necessary testing that you may have to do before and after travelling. Also, ensure you download the ArriveCAN app (or use the web portal) to submit your travel information if you’re planning on traveling to Canada, the CDC website also allows you to check the travel recommendations and risk level for each country.  You can check out the map here!

Give yourself extra time at the airport

Sure it’s nice to get in those extra minutes of shut-eye before an early flight or to head to the airport and immediately hit up the bar, but before you do, just make sure you’re giving yourself enough time to pass all the airport checks. With an increase in self-checkout kiosks and the potential for additional security measures, it may take you longer than you remember.

Carry your proof of vaccination

If you’re double vaxxed, it’s important to carry your proof of vaccination card, even if it’s just a picture on your phone. While it’s not a requirement everywhere you go, if you’ve got it, we don’t see the harm in being extra prepared!

Be mindful of where you’re headed

‘When in Rome’- you know the deal! As a courtesy tip for travelling during these times, we suggest doing some research before leaving to check out the masking and social distancing protocols for your destination. Even if you’re not required to wear a mask at home, there are plenty of places that do still require it.
