Lake Louise, located at the heart of Banff National Park, attracts millions of visitors all year round. And, who can blame them? It’s one of the most spectacular natural settings the world has to offer- and lucky for us, it’s right in our backyard.
But with fame (thanks Instagram), comes crowded lakeshores and busy visiting schedules, and we don’t even want to get into the parking situation! Having to fight for your spot in front of the lake’s crystalline waters can be frustrating, and in our opinion, the Lake Louise experience really shouldn’t end at those turquoise blue shoresides.
So here are 6 hidden gems at Lake Louise for you to truly experience a slice of this national treasure, away for the crowd!
0% effort, 100% mind-blowing, that pretty much summarizes what the summer gondolas can get you. Hop on and get ready for soaring heights! Surrounded by towering peaks and stunning glaciers that will greet you along the way, you’ll be getting all the gains (in elevation) without any of the pain.
From the gondolas rising up to the summit, you’ll get some of the best chances to spot wild grizzly bears and other animals in their natural element. Maintaining some distance not only keeps you safe, but also supports wildlife preservation. Make sure you head to the Wildlife Interpretive Centre to learn more about this amazing slice of nature!
There are actually 3 guided hikes only accessible from the top of the gondola ride! Learn everything you need to know about bears, endangered species and our landscape’s history while exploring protected areas. Note that you must be accompanied by a certified guide to have access.
LITERALLY, ELEVATED DINING
Feeling a little thirsty after all the “Ooohs!” and “Ahhhs!” on your way up? No worries! Whitehorn Bistro awaits right at the top of the mountain, at an impressive 2042m elevation. Servin’ up locally designed dishes paired with carefully selected Western Canadian bevies, that’s what we call elevated dining!
It’s funny how some distance makes everything different. Whether up from the lift, from the hiking trails or on the patio of Whitehorn Bistro (probably THE best patio in Lake Louise), you’ll be offered unbeatable views of Lake Louise from above. Panoramic views from this lesser-known spot are awaiting that perfect selfie, so don’t forget your camera!
PARKWAY TO PINT CHALLENGE
We couldn’t leave the active two-wheeler crew out, so here is the ultimate Lake Louise ride for ya! Bike the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) and win a free swag bag! Once you reach the Banded Peak Base Camp located, well, at the base of the mountain -duh!, treat yourself to their tasty smoked BBQ bites and a frosty pint. First come first served!
