Edmonton, we hope that you’re ready for the start of September! We sure are, especially because it looks like we’ve got a few final sunny days to enjoy before fall rolls around. So, we think you need to make the most of the opportunity, while keeping in mind some options when the rain says hello. Lucky for you, we’ve got tons of ideas for both!

Here are the best things to do in and around Edmonton this September.

Live Events and Music

HSBC CANADA SEVENS

One of the biggest things to look forward to this month is also arriving for the first time ever! Following years of sold-out crowds in Vancouver, the HSBC Rugby Sevens have decided to show Edmonton some love. This 2-day event is action-packed, offering multiple games per day featuring some of the best players in the world. In summary- you don’t even have to know about rugby to know this is worth it.

When: September 25th and 26th
Where: 11000 Stadium Road
Cost: $106.20+

CANADIAN DERBY

For a more classic option, you can always go off to the races! The 92nd instalment (geeze) of the Canadian Derby is in Edmonton this month, and is the perfect off-the-beaten-path option for you and your friends. We think there are two ways to approach- dress up and be fancy, or grab general admission and make $2 bets based on names alone.

When: September 11th
Where: 4711 Airport Perimeter Road
Cost: $10+

WATCH A FOOTBALL GAME

The Edmonton Elks have officially returned to Commonwealth Stadium! It hasn’t been an easy start to the season for them, but we’re confident that playing in front of their home crowd will give them the energy they need to turn around. We’re happy to be a part of it.

When: September 11th and 18th
Where: 11000 Stadium Road
Cost: $35+

MURAL MASSIVE

Alright, onto a few non-sports options. Hosted by the Grindstone Theatre, Mural Massive is a 2-day event showcasing art, music, and entertainment, with food and drink options to keep you going all day long. For a final summer weekend, this is hard to beat.

When: September 10th to 12th

DOWNTOWN LIVE

Meanwhile, this free concerts series courtesy of Edmonton Downtown is set to wrap up this month. Each week, you can check out amazing local artists, for free, and intimate as well as outdoor settings around the city. And while it’s fun to stumble across one, we say build a night around it instead!

When: Concerts throughout September

CADENCE WEAPON

We’re including this online event for two reasons. First up, Cadence Weapon (Rollie Pemberton) was actually Edmonton’s Poet Laureate between 2009 and 2011. Second, he’s bonafide a cult legend ever since, and we cannot get over his collaborations with Canadian producer Jacques Greene. Of course, the cherry on top is that it’s free!

When: September 11th
Where: Online
Cost: Free

EDMONTON CORN MAZE

Young and old alike can appreciate the value of a good corn maze during the start of fall. And honestly, the Edmonton Corn Maze is amongst the best in the country. Massive, and featuring a new design every year,  a trip here is going to be a breath of fresh (literally) this month.

UKRAINIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE VILLAGE

DRIVE OUT TO THE GARDEN

Full honesty- we think that the U of A Botanic Garden is best enjoyed during the spring or the fall. Keep in mind the Fall Family Festival later in the month.

COMMUNE WITH A COUPLE OF BISON

For the same reason, we love a late summer/early fall trip out to Elk Island. Of course, that weekend walk is made all the sweeter if you actually get to see some bison up close and personal, but either way, it’s a great time. After all, they’re just 1 of hundreds of species living in the park!

And, unlike those poor folks in Calgary, we can get to them in a day trip or less.

Live plays are back at the Citadel Theatre! Currently showing is Mary’s Wedding, which is a prairie romance set during the time of the First World War, but reimagined through a Métis perspective.
